Not that it is news to those involved in ending homelessness, but the sinking economy is increasing the demand for shelter.
Across the state, homeless shelters are seeing an unusual increase in people seeking services. For example, in the Archdiocese of Newark, shelters are typically 30 percent full this time of year, said Elizabeth McClendon, who oversees the diocese homeless program. Many are already full. Some 50 percent of the women being referred have been laid off in the last two months, McClendon said. Most of the families have been evicted in the last five months.

The time for action is now if we are to avert a catastrophe. The NJ Advocacy Network, which is committed to ending homelessness, is working on several issues such as the county-based Homeless Trust Fund that need to be approved to insure that New Jersey can stop managing a crisis and move to ending homelessness.
