Homelessness Soars as Economy Sinks

Star-Ledger story highlights increase in homelessness

Not that it is news to those involved in , but the sinking economy is increasing the demand for shelter.

Across the state, homeless shelters are seeing an unusual increase in people seeking services. For example, in the Archdiocese of Newark, shelters are typically 30 percent full this time of year, said Elizabeth McClendon, who oversees the diocese homeless program. Many are already full. Some 50 percent of the women being referred have been laid off in the last two months, McClendon said. Most of the families have been evicted in the last five months.
